Serbian Singing Society Lira

Serbian Singing Society Lira’s mission is to propagate and perpetuate Serbian choral music.

Part of the beauty of the Orthodox worship services is attributed to its liturgical music. St. Luke Serbian Orthodox Church has always had a dedicated group of singers that have enriched the Divine Liturgy for as long as there has been a parish in the Washington D.C. metro area.

That legacy continues today as the church choir has grown to more than thirty choir members, which includes many of our senior parishioners along with many youth members, under the direction of Choir Director, p. Jelena Vranic. In May 2018, the current members committed to becoming a more organized group within the parish which led the group to adopt the name Serbian Singing Society Lira, chosen as lira is a beautiful instrument which has its origins in both the Bible and Serbian musical history.  A constitution and set of by-laws were adopted and an executive board was elected.  The choir is now also a member of the Serbian Singing Federation of the United States and Canada.

The choir incorporates various composers during the liturgy each Sunday and is also actively taking part in events outside of worship such as appearances at SerbFest, St. Sava Slava celebration, pairing sacred music with more traditional repertoire.

The choir members participate in routine choir practices that take place during the week and immediately before Sunday Divine Liturgy, except during the summer months. Many of its members also participate in the annual Serbian Singing Federation conference each year.

If you would like to join the choir, you are encouraged to contact the choir director protinica Jelena Vranic.
